Why the name, “THE PROJECTS”? The very first Housing projects constructed (federal subsidized housing) in the United States happened to be Techwood Homes in Atlanta, Georgia. Built in 1936, Techwood Homes consisted of 1,230 housing units. Techwood Homes remained an all-white housing project until 1968. Within 6 years of integration, Techwood Homes was more than 50% African-American. For most of the 20th century, Atlanta was known for its public housing. The city had pioneered the concept in the 1930s. By the early 1990s, the Atlanta Housing Authority owned roughly 14,000 individual units across 43 properties. By 2011, Atlanta became the first major city in the U.S. to completely do away with public housing. (excerpts taken from the article by Stephanie Garlock) The Projects Restaurant and Lounge is a “Deep South“ inspired, American cuisine eatery. The establishment is a minority, natives of Atlanta, family-owned restaurant, through the unique naming of food dishes and cocktails, is designed to pay homage to the forgotten communities in Atlanta that no longer exist, that served as the “Birthplace of ATL flavor” that the world knows today. The atmosphere is geared towards a local feel, with true southern hospitality, where everyone is welcomed and is family. Simply stated, “there could be no Atlanta without The Projects!”
